Pretty much the same decision was made last year in North America.
Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche announced the transition plan at the company annual meeting in Germany a few days ago. Smart will go completely electric in Europe by 2020.
Despite the fact that Smart cars seem very applicable for such transition due to their image of stylish and compact city cars, the company may face certain difficulties soon. Looking back to last year, after Smart went completely electric in North America, the brand lost about 2/3 of their dealerships in the region – only 27 of 85 dealers agreed to continue working with Smart, with majority located in California, New York, and other states with zero-emission vehicle mandates.
